The Chevy Chase View Town Council elections are governed by Sec. 5. of the Chevy Chase View Charter. The following is a summary of our election procedures. The Town election process may be affected by the restrictions imposed due to the pandemic. Information regarding changes to the process will be communicated to residents in advance of the election.
The eligible voters in Chevy Chase View elect the five members of the Chevy Chase View Town Council. An election is held every year in May. Council members are elected to serve a two-year term. In even-numbered years, two seats on the Council are subject to election; in odd-numbered years, the remaining three seats on the Council are subject to election.
Each year, the process for electing members of the Council begins with the appointment of a Nominations Committee by the current Council. The Nominations Committee must:
- be appointed by April 1;
- be residents of Chevy Chase View;
- distribute to each residence in Chevy Chase View a notice of the upcoming Council election by April 7. The notice contains a form for submitting nominations, the April 21 deadline for making nominations, and the date of the election in May. Any eligible voter in Chevy Chase View may nominate Council candidates by completing the form and delivering it to any member of the Nominations Committee by the deadline. The Nominations Committee may also nominate candidates.
- confirm that each nominated person is willing to serve if elected.
- report to the Council by April 23 the names of the persons nominated.
By the last Tuesday in April, the Council of Chevy Chase View will announce the names of all candidates, the time and place of balloting, and the names of the Judges and Tellers. The time selected for the election will be within one week of the second Tuesday in May. Balloting typically occurs at the Christ Episcopal Church from 7 to 9 p.m.
To be eligible to vote in the Chevy Chase View election, a person must reside in Chevy Chase View and be registered to vote in Montgomery County. (You can find registration information at http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/Elections).
A voter who is unable to vote in person may obtain an absentee ballot from the Election Judges before 6:00 p.m. the day before the election. To be counted, an absentee ballot must be in the hands of the Election Judges prior to the closing of the polls.
Voters may vote for as many candidates as there are offices to be filled by the election. Write-in votes are also allowed.
When balloting is concluded, the Tellers count the votes cast and report the results to the Judges. The Judges certify as winners the two or three candidates who receive the most votes, depending on the number of open seats. In the event of a tie vote, a run-off election is held by the second Tuesday in June. A Council member whose term has expired may serve until the results of the run-off election are known. Following the election, each newly elected Council member will take the oath of office within ten days.
A vacancy on the Council can occur due to resignation, death, or moving outside Chevy Chase View. The Council will appoint a person to fill any vacancy, and that person will serve for the remainder of the unexpired term.
