To the many of us that walk our dogs through the neighborhood,
As the weather takes a turn for the better this week, it is great to see more people enjoying walks. However, It has come to our attention that there is a growing concern regarding the improper disposal of dog waste, particularly in areas where children walk to school or the school bus stops. We are writing to address this issue and emphasize the importance of responsible dog ownership for the safety and cleanliness of our community.
It has been observed that there is a significant increase in incidents where dog owners are leaving their pet waste behind, especially near the sidewalks on Summit Avenue. This not only poses a health risk but also creates an unsightly and unpleasant environment for everyone.
According to Montgomery County, Maryland regulations (Section 5-203 of the Montgomery County Code), pet owners are required to promptly remove and dispose of their dog’s waste when in public areas, such as parks, sidewalks, and other shared spaces.
To comply with the law and contribute to the well-being of our community, we kindly request all dog owners to adhere to the following guidelines:
- Pick Up After Your Pet: Always carry waste bags and promptly clean up after your dog.
- Dispose of Waste Properly: After picking up dog waste, please place the bag in your own trash container. Do not leave filled waste bags on the ground or in public areas.
- Educate Your Younger Family Members: Discuss the importance of responsible dog ownership within your home.
- Leash and Supervise: Keep your dogs on a leash and under control at all times. This not only ensures their safety but keeps them in your eyesight, so you are aware if you need to pick up after your dog.
Let’s work together to keep our walks enjoyable for everyone.
